Minimally Invasive Retinal Prosthesis
An Interesting Project Fabricated Through MOSIS
John Wyatt and his collaborators at the Retinal Implant Project, a joint
effort of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Massachusetts
Eye and Ear Infirmary, and the Veteran's Administration Boston
Healthcare System, are developing a device that is intended to restore
vision to patients with macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa,
conditions that are age-related and can result in blindness.
Their goal --- for patients whose retinas are no longer sensitive to
light but retain intact neural connections --- an electronic implant
attached surgically to the back of the eye that receives images from a
tiny camera mounted on a pair of glasses and transmits them to the brain.
Integrated circuit fabrication services for this project were provided
by MOSIS. [View Full Article in PDF Format]
